Welcome to the Ray Davison Firefighters'
Resource website. This website is dedicated to the memory of Ray Davison, Deputy
Fire Chief of Vergennes VFD who passed away Christmas Eve, 2004.
Our hope is that this website becomes a focal point for the firefighting
community in Vermont. Please share your firefighting stories, share your photos,
and read what others have contributed.
Anyone may share a story, but registered users also may add events
to the calendar, photos to the photo album, and when they write a story, it
shows that they wrote it instead of "anonymous." This allows you to
receive emails whenever someone comments on a story you have written.
Thanks for visiting.
Please help us. If you know of an organization that Ray belonged to, please tell us. This includes honorary memberships, club memberships, or anything Ray may have belonged to.
Currently, we know Ray was a member of the Vergennes Fire Department, the Addison County Firefighters' Association, the Vermont State Firefighters' Association, the Congregational Church of Vergennes, and Valley Lodge. Please email Brian if you know of anything else that called Ray a member. |

Ray's dad owned a feed store in Orleans. He had one of the "fire phones" in his store, near the firehouse in the village.
Before the days of centralized radio dispatch, fire alarms were placed to the department's fire phone system, a series of party-line phones that triggered the ringing of the fire bell and a series of calls via a "phone tree" to the homes of volunteers.
Ray was fond of telling the story of when he was a young boy, the fire phone rang at the store and he was alone. As luck would have it, he was the only person to pick up the fire phone.
It was an elderly woman who lived outside the village. Knowing enough to gather the needed information, Ray asked the nature of the fire, but also needed to know the seriousness of the blaze, in case another volunteer fire company was needed to render mutual aid.
Ray asked, "How bad is the fire?"
A pause.
The woman replied crisply: "SUFFICIENT TO BE CALLING THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, YOUNG MAN!"
Rest in Peace, Brother Ray.
